And finally, for storage, Maxwell Technologies‘ sale of ultracapacitors to the China wind power industry unexpectedly accelerated in Q1. One reason is that Chinese wind power is growing at a faster clip (this supports the view of Goldman’s China team which has raised their forecasts for annual installations by 4% for 2011-2015 after reported 2010 installations exceeded their forecast by 18% ).
Another reason for the growth is that Maxwell is winning new customers in China because its ultracapacitors require no maintenance or replacement for 12 years, unlike other batteries. This is certainly an attractive proposition for customers responsible for maintaining wind towers for lengthy periods.
